Update from the University of Washington Admissions Office

on February 13, 2011 in Alerts, Application Process, New This Month

This update just arrived from the University of Washington Office of Admissions…………

“First some background: For several years the UW has offered applicants the ability to set up a “UW NetID” (username) and password that allows them to access MyUW, their personal online gateway to the UW.  By setting up NetIDs, they gain access to MyUW, where they have access to important current application information.  For those who end up being offered admission, access to MyUW is required to view financial aid award information, apply for housing, register for classes, and more.

What is changing: Until this year, we gave applicants access to MyUW by mailing them paper letters with codes necessary to set up their NetIDs.  This year, we sent emails with a link to a website that allows them to set up UW NetIDs using the same usernames and passwords they used for the UW online application.  We have partnered with our online application vender, ApplyWeb, to create an innovative online system that bridges their ApplyWeb identity to their new UW identity.

When did applicants receive their “NetID” emails? We sent all of the NetID emails over the past few days.  The last ones were sent yesterday.

What about applicants who mailed paper applications? The handful of applicants (fewer than 300) who applied using paper applications will not receive the NetID emails.  They will need to use the old paper method of setting up their NetIDs.  Their NetID letters were mailed yesterday.

A general note on application processing: Application reviews are going well, and at the Seattle campus of the UW we still expect to mail admissions decisions from March 15 to 31.  As usual, we will inform applicants of their decisions by sending traditional letters sent via postal mail.  As a backup to the letters, MyUW will show their decisions a few days after they should have received their letters.  This is another reason for applicants to set up their UW NetIDs.”

Office Closure Update:

“The Office of Admissions (undergraduate admissions) will be closed to calls, emails, appointments, and admissions counseling from February 18 to March 4. Our campus visit programs, which include tours and information sessions, will continue without interruption http://admit.washington.edu/Visit.

This closure will enable us to complete our review of freshman applications. Last year University Week published an article on our partial closure http://uwnews.org/uweek/article.aspx?id=55957. We think the title captured the spirit of our efforts: “Admissions staff work together to process avalanche of autumn applications.”

For urgent matters that arise during this period, you will still be able to reach our staff. We will leave a number on our phone tree for callers with urgent matters. Also, you will still be able to call or email individual members of the staff directly. However, please contact us only with matters that truly cannot wait until after March 4. That way we will better be able to help those with admissions-related issues that need immediate resolution, while maintaining our intense work on freshman review.

Freshman decisions will be mailed March 15 to 31. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to admit the freshman class of 2011!”
