Seattle Community College Update

on May 20, 2013 in Admissions Process, New This Month

In June 2011, I worked with the Office of Advancement for Seattle Community Colleges to host an event highlighting the programs available to students at three Seattle community colleges: North Seattle CC, Seattle Central CC, and North Seattle CC. We had an excellent turnout of 19 independent educational consultants eager to learn more about the opportunities available.

We heard a representative from the college transfer center discuss the AA degree requirements, options for majors at four-year institutions, admission/graduation requirements for those majors, transfer requirements, and direct transfer agreements. Along with all of the four-year public institutions and some out-of-state universities, the Seattle Community Colleges have a matriculation agreement with the following private Washington institutions: Bastyr University, Gonzaga University, Pacific Lutheran University, St. Martins University, Seattle Pacific University, and Seattle University. Students from the Seattle Community Colleges have transferred to a variety of programs worldwide.

A representative from the workforce programs discussed the range of professional/technical programs offered, including the “STEM Academy,” a real community for students who are paired with mentors in this National Science Foundation-funded program. A tour of the new math and science building at Seattle Central CC showcased the breadth of programs, small class sizes, facilities, and quality of instruction. We were able to meet with some faculty in this program and hear more details about the expanded offerings and corporate-funding expansion.

An overview of the Creative Academy included a tour of the excellent art, graphic design, and photography facilities. The outstanding faculty, small class size, convenience, value, opportunity for leadership, diversity, and urban and progressive environment define this program.

We also learned about the study abroad programs available, including a summer program designed for health care professionals. Top programs are applied and include business, IT, health care, culinary, and the creative academy.

We closed with a delicious lunch prepared by students in the highly touted Seattle Culinary Academy‘s dining room. For more details on programs at all of Washington’s community colleges, click here.
