Finger Lakes, New York College Tours

Cornell University

I began my tour through the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York at the University of Rochester, a small research university located in a beautiful setting near the city of Rochester. More information is available in an earlier summary of a University of Rochester representative’s presentation in my office. This small, private research university has a very strong engineering program, with extensive research opportunities.

Cornell University is part of the Ivy League and is located in Ithaca, NY. Undergraduate students must apply to one of several autonomous schools or colleges within the university, which include Arts & Sciences; Engineering; Agriculture and Life Sciences; Architecture, Art and Planning; Hotel Management; Human Ecology; Industrial and Labor Relations; and Computing and Information Science. I was able to enjoy a wonderful meal at the School of Hotel Management, one of the most prestigious in the US.

HWS Sailing

Hobart & William Smith College is a small liberal arts college located on the banks of beautiful Seneca Lake and enjoys a nationally ranked co-ed sailing program. HWS offers a strong, four-year architecture program. No core is required and students develop a plan that is both structured and flexible. Many students are offered merit aid to study at HWS, and students may choose whether or not to submit their standardized test scores. I met with the admissions representative in Seattle and wrote about this in an earlier post.

St. Lawrence University is located close to the Canadian border in Canton, NY. Students mentioned the strong sense of community at this small liberal arts university. There is an emphasis on study abroad and active learning in a variety of locations, and many students enjoy hands-on learning both on and off campus.  Students may enjoy the opportunity to study abroad more than once during their enrollment at St. Lawrence. Several pre-professional and combined grad/undergraduate programs are offered. St. Lawrence is standardized test-optional.

Ithaca College has a student body of 6,281 and is known for a very strong communications program. Undergraduates can select majors within the schools of business, communications, health sciences and human performance, humanities and sciences, and music. The majority of students come from the Northeast; however, 56 percent of students are from out of state.
