The New Coalition Application

on October 6, 2015 in Alerts

coalition-verticalI just returned from the National Association of College Admission Counseling conference in San Diego, and the biggest topic of conversation was the new Coalition for Access, Affordability and Success. This coalition of now 83 colleges rose out of their dissatisfaction with the Common Application including the lack of flexibility in incorporating individual colleges preferences and technical issues during the application season. The hope is that this new application will increase access for all students, but there is considerable skepticism on all fronts, from overwhelmed counseling offices to colleges left out of the conversation.

The biggest surprise to everyone at the overflowing session was the timing of application which will be available to the class of 2017. Another hot topic was the incorporation of a portfolio (or locker as it will be called), allowing students to begin building content freshman year. Here is a terrific overview of the current state of the application and the concerns that have been raised. More comments are being evaluated daily, and announcements of application implementation postponement will inevitably continue to roll in from individual colleges as they review the barrage of comments flowing in.
